Russia Will Begin Serial Production of Small Nuclear Power Plants

The President called the energy infrastructure a key strategic asset and a competitive advantage for Russia. He reminded that powerful and reliable energy sources are needed to operate data centers that develop artificial intelligence.Unlike traditional large nuclear power plants, small nuclear power plants are designed for local energy supply, especially in remote regions, on islands, military bases, or industrial facilities. Their construction takes 3–5 years, compared to 7–10 years for traditional nuclear plants. Spent fuel can be processed on-site, reducing the need for transportation and storage.According to Putin, Russia plans to build 38 new nuclear power units over the next 20 years, most of them in the Urals, Siberia, and the Far East. Their combined capacity will equal the country’s current nuclear generation. The President also noted that Russia is ready to offer its advanced nuclear energy solutions to foreign partners.
