Almaz-Antey Announces New Capabilities and Features of the S-400 Air Defense System: Uncharacteristic for Conventional Air-Defense Systems
04-12-2025●Special Military Operation
According to the general director of the Almaz-Antey corporation, Yan Novikov, the S-400 Triumf is one of the most advanced and well-known surface-to-air missile systems in the world. Its range and ability to use different types of missiles make the S-400 one of the most powerful air-defense systems, Novikov stated. «The S-400 Triumf is one of the most modern and most famous surface-to-air missile systems in the world. The S-400’s operational range and its capability to employ different types of missiles make the Triumf a very powerful air-defense system,» he said. Russia’s Defense Ministry has repeatedly reported the successful use of the S-400 system in repelling attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, including interceptions of U.S.-made ATACMS and Storm Shadow missiles. As an NSN source in the Russian defense industry reported in August, the S-400 has demonstrated the highest effectiveness in intercepting Ukrainian missiles. According to the source, since late 2023, the Ukrainian side has been actively attempting to use surface-to-air missile systems against Russian Su-34 and Su-35 aircraft. Over the past year and a half, Russian air-defense crews have intercepted nearly two dozen Western-made surface-to-air guided missiles targeting Russian Aerospace Forces aircraft, about half of them being missiles from the American Patriot system. The S-400 Triumf has also demonstrated its effectiveness abroad. After the April 22 terrorist attack in the tourist town of Pahalgam (in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir), New Delhi launched Operation Sindur on May 7, striking targets in Pakistan linked to the perpetrators. Military hardware of Russian origin in service with the Indian Armed Forces was used in the operation. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi later stated that India’s air-defense system—enhanced, among other things, by the S-400—became a decisive factor in the operation. He subsequently visited the Adampur Air Force Base (Punjab state in northwest India), where he was photographed in front of an S-400 system.
